i’ve been seeing more than my fair share of theater lately. it’s quite astonishing. since last thursday, i have seen four productions, and by this coming thursday i’ll have seen at least two more. thanks to the kindness of hanvnah, i was also able to stop into the opening party for capital fringe, which i incidentally fell asleep at right before we left. i thought it over and made the decision to purchase a sixpack pass, and i’m strongly leaning towards buying another. here’s what i’ve seen thus far:
- thursday: the pabst & popcorn hour’s production of dr. faustus. this you absolutely must see, if not at least to get the free refreshments and have the opportunity to be damned on stage.
- saturday: theater j’s pangs of the messiah, which was absolutely stunning and thought provoking. the setting in the (near) future made things a little awkward, but the subject matter is timely in more than a handful of ways
- sunday: washington shakespeare company’s macbeth, a.k.a. “the nude one.”despite the critics, the buzz around this one is still subsiding. i’m glad that it closed so that d. can join the weekend brunch bunch again.
- tuesday (tonight): callie kimball’s nutshell. not that i’m at the epicenter of the dc theater scene, but i realized as soon as it started that i knew a third of the cast in one way or another. that said, it was hootin’ and hollerin’ take on t.s. eliot’s the waste land that centered around elephants. i’m sure everyone was baffled as i was by the description, but that’s what drew people in.
the rest of this week is still up in the air, but i know i’m seeing a swedish tiger on wednesday at woolly mammoth and the trojan women on thursday at source. it’s a good time to be a patron of the arts.
